Ethnic Divisions and Civil War
نویسنده
چکیده
The period since World War Two has been marked by a great deal of civil war. Most of these civil wars have been ethnic civil wars. This paper presents a one shot game of ethnic conflict. The government is endowed with goods that it distributes among ethnic groups. The government is initially controlled by one of the groups and other factions can expend resources to fight for control of the government. I show that the incidence of war is higher in more ethnically fragmented countries. I discuss external interventions to decrease the incidence of civil war. I show that military aid to the government can decrease conflict while economic aid can increase conflict. ∗I thank V.V. Why Are Ethnically Divided Countries Poor?
This paper presents a dynamic game with capital accumulation of war between ethnic groups. Ethnically divided countries are more prone to fighting wars and the threat of war reduces income. Ethnic divisions lead to pressure for the government to redistribute resources from some ethnic groups to other groups. Groups fight each other to control redistribution policy. The model can account for 70 ...

Terrain is central to understanding why some countries have contentious ethnic divisions, while others do not. We argue that access to variable rugged terrain facilitated the development and survival of more distinct ethnic groups, even in the face of government repression. We show that the persistence of greater ethnic diversity in highly variable rugged areas as well as these ethnic groups te...

Arabic Spring and its consequences, particularly in Syria and later its civil war, has led to fundamental changes in political layouts and alignments in the region and beyond it. One of the main effects of these developments is the deepening of the ethnic and religious divisions in the Middle East and consequently new alignments of national and subnational actors. Subnational ethnic-religious g...
متن کاملEthnic Inequality and Civil War SURJ
65 Conventional wisdom suggests ethnic inequality predicts civil war onset. Stewart suggests that when individual selfesteem is bound up with ethnic identity, ethnic inequality produces grievances that lead to mobilization and civil war. However, recent cross-national studies have been inconclusive due to methodological problems (Fearon J & Laitin D, working paper presented at APSA 1999). Altho...
متن کاملDo Ethnic and Nonethnic Civil Wars Have the Same Causes?
A booming quantitative literature on large-scale political violence has identified important economic and political determinants of civil war. That literature has treated civil war as an aggregate category and has not considered if identity (ethnic/religious) wars have different causes than nonidentity wars. The author argues that this is an important distinction and that identity wars are due ...
